Descent is
the easy
part.

Water pressure is patient and honest. It is time that kills divers. The Sounder 300 is built around the one instrument on a diving watch that has ever saved a life: a bezel that tells you when to leave.

01 / Assembled

Forty point five millimetres

Small enough to live under a cuff. Large enough to read at eleven metres with a mask half flooded. There is nothing on this dial that is not load bearing.

02 / Drawing

Two hundred and six parts

Every one of them dimensioned, tolerated and signed off before the first was cut. The drawing is the watch. The steel is just the drawing, obeyed.

03 / Exploded

Nine assemblies

Pulled apart in the order a watchmaker would, from the crystal down to the caseback. This is the whole of it. Nothing is hidden behind a badge.

04 / Bezel

One hundred and twenty clicks

One direction only. Knocked in the dark, it can tell you that you have less time than you thought. It can never tell you that you have more.

05 / Calibre H-24

Two hundred and eighty thousand beats a day

A balance the width of a shirt button turns and returns eight times a second, for sixty eight hours, on a spring you could snap with a sneeze.

06 / Reassembly

It goes back together in reverse

Caseback, rotor, movement, dial, hands, crystal, bezel. So does a diver: slowly, in stages, and never faster than the plan.

07 / Luminous

Nine hours from one minute of light

Below thirty metres the colour red is already gone. What is left is the glow you charged on deck, and how well you can count with it.

Fig. 3 / Case elevation, section

The profile above is not an illustration. It is the same set of coordinates the model on this page is turned from, and the same one the case is cut to.

Forty seven and a half millimetres lug to lug, with a drilled lug and a flat caseband, because a watch you cannot change the strap on is a watch you stop wearing.

Fig. 4 / Materials and finishing

Four surfaces, and an argument about each one

Finishing is not decoration. Every choice below is a decision about how the watch behaves wet, cold, and at the far end of a long day.

01

Cold forged 316L

Most cases at this price are machined out of bar stock, because bar stock is cheap and a mill does not care. We forge the blank first. The grain follows the shape of the case instead of being cut across it, which is the difference between a case that dents and a case that dings.

Every surface that faces the sky is brushed, so it does not throw sunlight back at you off the deck. The two chamfers that face the wrist are polished by hand, so there is one hard line of light along the flank when you turn it.

02

A dial that refuses to shine

Gloss dials photograph beautifully and read terribly. Ours is a matte lacquer, sprayed in four passes and stoved between each, with a grain fine enough that it goes flat grey under a torch instead of white.

The indices are cut, polished and set by hand, not printed. Each one carries four tenths of a millimetre of luminous compound, which is roughly three times what a printed marker can hold.

4 lacquer passes
12 applied indices
03

Finishing you will never see

The caseback is solid. It is a 300 metre watch, and an exhibition window is a lovely thing to own and a poor thing to dive with. Which means the côtes on the bridges, the perlage under the barrel and the polished anglage on every edge are for an audience of one watchmaker, once, in Portland.

We do it anyway. A movement finished only where it is visible is a movement finished by someone who was hoping you would not look.

04

The bracelet is half the watch

Solid links, screwed not pinned, tapering from twenty millimetres at the lug to sixteen at the clasp. The clasp extends over seven millimetres of wetsuit without a tool, and retracts on the boat with one thumb.

If you would rather have rubber, the tropic strap is moulded from a 1967 pattern and costs you nothing extra. Both fit through drilled lugs, so you can change your mind in under a minute with a paperclip.

142 g on steel
78 g on rubber

A dive watch is not a depth gauge.
It is a promise about time,
kept underwater,
without electricity.
